Does the type of paper which the words are written on have an affect on the a dyslexic child?
I have found that if the paper has a slight shine to it then the children have difficulty reading common words, even if they have read them previously on flashcards. Try copying the story onto yellow paper (not bright but not too pale) or laying a piece of yellow acetate over the top of the book and see if this has any effect. Other colors to try could be blue, green or pink. The color acts as a barrier and calms the words down on the page (you may get the response that the words don't move on the page any more). Have a go. Hopefully it will work for you. It did for m!.

Spelling Help -
My son was in 2nd grade and was in special ed classes for English along with regular classes. He is now in 5th grade and has tested out of special ed help which has put him in a regular English class in the middle of the year. Our main problem is spelling: he is trying really hard but I can see him falling futher behind and becoming very frustrated. Any advice ways I can help him at home would be great..

Should We Keep Our Child in Public School? -
Our fourth child has dyslexia. Middle School is hard on everyone. His emotional heart plummeted in 5th grade with an attentive kind teacher and a tutoring team.
I have read that these kids/adults are gifted yet they spend their entire school day surviving our systems that are not compatible with their learning differences. Yet, it is the system we have.
And if we do pull him, would he ever be able to step back into that structure? The social dynamics are very life sucking along with the continuous long days of requirements.
Here in North Carolina, 5th grade is a passing year from year end testing. His teaching team knew he would not be able to pass the math test, he did barely reach the reading range required. But because he had not reached the math, he was required by law to try two more times ... along with non-focused required summer school (if he didn't pass the second time). His team got him out of the third required test. His self-esteem was not up to three failings ... yet that was what the system required to be allowed to go to 6th grade. The testing required to be promoted will continue. Share your experience or advice with us.

Diagnosed But Thinks It Gone Now -
My husband, 46, was diagnosed as a child with dyslexia. He was sent to Sylvan for treatment and now says he was cured when he was a child. He claims he does not "have it" anymore (although he is willing to get help).
When we talk about dyslexia he gets very upset. It has put a huge strain on our marriage. We are not able to grow together as a loving couple. He is a dyanamic mechanic and an avid football fan! He also has little self esteem and is very negative. He is a very happy person in his comfort zone. Anything out of this comfort zone leaves him confused. This causes frustration and anger. It is very difficult for us to resolve any issues which make it hard for us to learn, and grow together as a couple. Who do we see to get help?
