Spices Dyslexic Boy's Spice Business - A 12-year-old boy has started his own business after becoming fed up with suggestions that his dyslexia might affect his chances of a good job. Tom Sweet, from Lampeter, Ceredigion, set up a market stall importing foreign herbs and spices earlier this month.

Classroom AssistantGMB to Consult Classroom Assistants in Northern Ireland - GMB this morning received a final offer to resolve the long running negotiations over job evaluation issues relating to 7,000 Classroom Assistants in Northern Ireland. There will be a re-grading of all 7,000 classroom assistant jobs in Northern Ireland . It is expected that up to 50% will be upgraded. The new rates of pay will range from £11,619 to £20,235 for full time staff depending on grade and service.

Elaine FergusonDyslexic Woman Opens Dyslexia School - A dyslexic woman has achieved a lifelong dream by opening a school for children with the condition. Elaine Ferguson has spent $200,000 of her own cash opening the non-for-profit facility in a former school building. Springvale Dyslexia School will teach 50 children from across East Lancashire with referrals being made through the local education authorities.

While he'll never "love to read," he's good at other things. He fixes the school's computers and is very proud of that. We think he should prepare for college. Patrick Dempsey Patrick Dempsey is Hitting the Accelerator - For a guy who struggled with dyslexia and never finished high school, Dempsey has­managed to become a walking encyclopedia of automobile model numbers, horsepower, and torque. He turned pro in 2005, becoming part owner and driver for a sports-car endurance-racing team. This is a passion that he has been better able to indulge since his celebrated comeback from obscure '80s actor to Dr. ­McDreamy.

Rugby Rugby Star Tackles Dyslexia - A Welsh Rugby player who fought dyslexia and bullying at school came to Ruislip to tell children how he got through it. Scott Quinell, 34, faced constant taunting as a youngster, finding it hard to read and write. Scott, known as Mighty Quinn, said: "I don't want other people to go through what I went through at school. It's about getting the message out that there is help.

Children in classSchools Turn to Direct Instruction to Master Basics - Adam Heywood stands in front of a dozen 5- and 6-year-olds. On the wall, the sign says, “Feet on the floor. Hands in your lap. Back against the chair.”
“Let’s sound out the word maaad,” Heywood tells the class, stretching out the word.
The tempo is very fast. The call-and-response sounds like a choral group. Without breaking stride, Heywood calls on individual students to gauge whether that child understands the question. The lesson is highly scripted and every component is broken into the smallest possible pieces.

PhonicsPhonics is a Good Teaching Tool - Researchers studying the most effective way to teach reading have found phonics to be an important part of teaching children to read, write and even spell.
Although some children learn to read on their own before going to school, for most children who are beginning readers, phonics is key to helping them pronounce and recognize words. Readers must be able to figure out new words in order to understand what is read, and phonics is an important way for children to develop that skill.
