COPS Dyslexia Testing Software - While doing this course I have come across the LUCID software range. There is Lucid Rapid - a quick testing tool for ages 4 - 15, it takes about 15 minutes and will indicate if there is a low, mild, or high possibliity of Dyslexia. It is done as 'games' on the computer so avoiding a stressful testing situation for the student.Lucid do various other software that give a more detailed test. My question - Has anyone come across these programmes and actually seen the results or used them? (Viv)
We at Kuwait Dyslexia Association applied Cops screener and found it useful.Therefor we have made an Araic COPS and it is very useful too. (Mohammed)
We use this software a lot in our school. It highlights exactly where the child's difficulties lie and gives suggestions on what to do. However, as a school we can only say that the child has specific learning difficulties. We are not able to diagnose dyslexia. (Sue)
The only drawback is that the licence has to be paid yearly / 3 or 5 yearly - it is not a one-off payment. (Sue)

Parent Frustration - I am a mother of two dyslexic children. My son is severly impaired and cannot function in a traditional classroom setting. He needs a multisensory approach to be used throughout the school day.
Schools that specialize in educating these students are not affordable for middle class families. Orton Gillingham tutoring appears to be enough for my daughter, but what does a parent do when it is not?
I have written to everyone in my school district, the department of education (RI and US), state senators, Laura Bush, celebreties who are dyslexic and have gotten nowhere. I can not find any financial aid for a dyslexic child to attend elementary or high school. I can find many scholarships for dyslexics going to college.
How will my children make it to college if they are never taught to read? In this day and age how can we identify a disability but refuse to address it???????????????

25 and Struggling - I feal soo alone. I'm 25 and Ii have been a diagnosed dyslexic since I was 8 years old. During school it was never an issue. I was always bright. I did GCSE'S and A levels and i even did a degree in English and Drama.
Now i feel like my world is falling apart. i worked in schools for my first few years and as such my dyslexia was almost a good thing as I was this brillient example to the kids. Now i don't work in schools, i work in a library and all of a suden my dyslexia is this big problem.
Today I had my two co-workers tell me that the help Ii got at school amounted to cheating and "Why did i think dyslexia wouldn't affect me being a librarian?" and that my degree was a stupid idea as it was like a color blind person becoming an electrican.
she also said that a few years ago only the best and the brightest got degrees and that now others did and my degree was not worth anything. I felt like a fraud getting my degree as I didnt work as hard as I should have. H

owever, it's no different than somone getting a degree who drank there way through their degree who is not dyslexic. It dosn't help that the more upset I get the more mistakes I make. i have wirten essays that have astounded my lecturers and yet now I seem to strugle, stringing a few sentences together.
Please, Ijust need some perspective. Can I be a librarian or are they right and I should do something that is not affected by my dyslexia? And if so I can't think of one job that dosn't involve some sort of writing and spelling. Please, i feel so alone.

Statemented Child -
Hi. Am looking for some advice about working with a statemented child [formally assessed in the UK as being dyslexic] with behavioral problems. The child is in Year 5 at primary school [aged about 9 or 10].
I have been employed to " watch over" this child constantly throughout the school day as they cannot be trusted to be unsupervised. The aggression shows mainly in the playground when she doesn't get her own way and will then hit out and say nasty things to the children around. Her classmates do not want to play with her most of the time, for which I can't blame them at times.
This child has been like this for many years, since starting school, really. I also have to supervise her at the morning and afternoon break times daily and also some lunchtimes too, depending on the mood of the child. How can I help this child? I feel there is a lot more I could be doing besides following them around all day! Any ideas anyone? Thankyou for your time. (Tess)

Just Dreaming - I am in college right now training to become a teacher. I worry I will not be a good one since of course I have dyslexia.
When I was younger I always wanted to get out of school, but now I feel like I have a calling to go back to school and help students who are having the same problems I used to have and still face today. You see I am getting mostly As in class. I have been on the Dean's list quite a few times.
The problem is that I have a problem with spelling. In fact I have to do spell checks on everything I turn in. I also have my mom check for spelling problems. How do I even know I will be a good teacher if I have problems spelling? I really want to help students like my teachers have helped me. I never thought I would say this but I really want to be a teacher. WIll I be good enough or am I just dreaming?
